Spring Maintenance Checklist for Victoria BC Homeowners

Spring Maintenance Checklist for Victoria BC Homeowners

Spring has sprung in Victoria BC, and for many homeowners that means it’s time for spring cleaning and home maintenance! Now that the warmer weather is approaching, it’s the perfect time to get outside and survey your home for damage, make repairs or changes, and prepare your home and garden for summer. Below is a checklist of 10 things to take care of while you perform your spring home maintenance this year:

  • Clear out gutters
Having clear gutters and downspouts is so important for the spring as they help channel the spring rain away from your home’s foundation and eaves. Be sure to make repairs early to avoid rot and flooding in your home.
  • Check for termites
Did you know that termites swarm in the springtime from around March to May or June? Be on the lookout for winged insects making their way in or out of woodwork around your home, and if you see them, call a professional pest control company ASAP.
  • Reseal exterior woodwork
It’s always a good idea to reseal wood decks, railings, fences, and trellises after the harsh winter in order to keep them in good condition for years to come. Try and reseal exterior woodwork every year or two for maximum effect.
  • Touch up exterior paint
If you want to repaint your home’s exterior, spring is a great time to begin preparations. Even if you are not going for a complete colour change, take a look around to make sure that no touch ups are needed after winter.
  • Inspect your roof
While we don’t get much snow here in Victoria, the winter season can still take its toll on your home’s roof. Take a quick look at your roof, even just from the ground, to check for missing shingles, missing pipes, or anything that may be out of order.
  • Check sprinklers and irrigation systems
Checking for broken sprinkler heads, misaligned sprinklers, or other damages after the winter can help save water and money before you begin to water your lawn and garden this year. Be sure to adjust any sprinklers that spray towards your home (especially windows) as this can cause moisture issues.

  • Repair driveways and paths
As concrete and asphalt freezes and thaws throughout the winter, it can expand and crack easily. Be sure to take a stroll around your property to check for signs of damage on walkways, paths, patios, and driveways.
  • Help prevent mosquitoes
If you see standing water on your property, there is a good chance that it will become a breeding ground for mosquitoes. Not only are they pesky, but they can carry viruses such as West Nile and Zika. Remove or manage standing water around your home to minimize mosquitoes this year.
  • Service your air conditioner
Just because your air conditioner works, it does not mean it is working efficiently. Be sure to have your air conditioner serviced annually and change the filter at least once per season.

  • Check screen doors and windows
Finally, be sure to check screen windows and doors for rips and tears. Even the smallest tear can let insects into your home!

We hope you take the time to show your home some tender love and care following these steps. Happy spring, Victoria!
